Even if you haven’t used a toll road recently, these messages can appear as if they’re legitimate notices from toll companies—this is a growing problem known as ‘smishing’.
In 2024, the FBI reported more than 60,000 incidents related to unpaid toll scams, with many victims feeling prompted to act due to the urgency within the messages. These scams often initiate with a text from a number that appears suspicious, either presenting an unfamiliar area code or using email addresses instead of traditional phone numbers.
